MindCloud Studio Export to MipMap and 3DGS Reconstruction Workflow

Overview

How to export point cloud data from MindCloud Studio as a MipMap file, import it into MipMap, preview the map, and run a 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) reconstruction.

Workflow

1. Export a MipMap file from MindCloud Studio

  1. Open MindCloud Studio and load a point cloud dataset.
  2. Select the point cloud file and click Export MipMap.
  3. Wait for the export to finish, then open the output directory to locate the exported file.

2. Import the file into MipMap

  1. Open MipMap and click New Project.
  2. Enter a project name and confirm.
  3. Select LiDAR, then import the MipMap file (.mpl) exported in the previous step.
  4. The import is complete when the positioning images and map preview are displayed.

3. Start reconstruction

  1. Enable Gaussian Splatting in the reconstruction settings.
  2. Start the reconstruction task.
  3. Monitor the task status and reconstruction progress in the task panel.

4. View the result

After reconstruction is complete, open the results page to inspect the 3DGS output and switch between the available result views as needed.

Tried to export, but after clinking Export MipMap got massage “c.bin not found in: …”

Also tried to export to .mpl format from the Export function, but .mpl is not shown in the available format options.

Also the free version of MipMap does not support LiDAR point cloud 3D reconstruction. You need a minimum of plan Ultra 149$ per month (discounted to 119$ at the moment of writing), but there is 15 day trail period you can experiment.

Figured it out!

That error was because I was editing and trying to export a ready point cloud that I downloaded from MindcloudxAI. If you do that the file does not contain the video information. What you have to do is download the entire folder from the Pocket 2 itself or download the entire project from MindcloudxAI.

Guess I`ll pile up few projects and then activate the trail of MipMap to see the results. Can`t wait to see how it performs.
